How Do I Access Bioidentical Hormone Supplementation?
Bioidentical hormones are a prescription-only medication. If you would like to use bioidentical hormone supplementation for a hormone deficiency, we suggest that you discuss it with your GP. Be aware however, that many GP’s are unfamiliar with supplementation using bioidentical hormones and therefore may require further information before prescribing for you or may be unwilling to prescribe. In these situations you may find the following suggestions useful.
- Request your compounding pharmacist to send information on bioidentical hormones to your doctor. For names of compounding pharmacies in New Zealand see the useful links under the educational resources section of this website
- Ask your doctor to contact your local compounding pharmacy
- Contact your compounding pharmacy for names of medical doctors in your area who have been trained or have experience in bioidentical hormone supplementation
- Have a consultation with Patient Advocates, a natural hormone therapy clinic. The nurses at this clinic will then send a letter to your GP requesting him/her to prescribe the appropriate hormones for you (www.naturalhormonetherapy.co.nz).
